Since its launch in 2013, Chrome Apps have come a long way, but existing web technologies can already do the job well, so support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux ends in June 2020. Customers with Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will be entitled to a policy extending support to December 2020.
This end of support is for Chrome Apps; other Chrome extensions are unaffected.
Lifecycle Timeline
- March 2020: The Chrome Web Store stops accepting new Chrome Apps. Developers can update existing Chrome Apps until June 2022.
- June 2020: End of support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Customers with Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade will be entitled to a policy extending support to December 2020.
- December 2020: End of support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- June 2021: End of support for NaCl, PNaCl, and PPAPI APIs.
- June 2021: End of support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS. Customers with Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education Upgrade can use a policy extending support to June 2022.
- June 2022: End of support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS for all customers.
This change does not affect support for Chrome extensions. Google will continue to support and invest in Chrome extensions on all existing platforms. Building a strong extension ecosystem is essential to Chrome’s mission, and we are committed to providing a useful extension platform to customize the browsing experience for all users.
