Years ago people were already saying domains no longer matter — it’s the mobile app era, a good domain isn’t that important anymore. Yesterday, domain brokerage giant Saw.com announced on social media that it took part in the sale of the top-tier domain AI.com.
The buyer turns out to be OpenAI — the developer behind the red-hot ChatGPT. The price wasn’t disclosed, but based on historical valuations it must be at least $11 million (roughly ¥75.35 million).
AI.com now redirects to ChatGPT’s homepage at chat.openai.com.
ChatGPT has no official mobile app — it has always been browser-based — so buying this domain is well worth it: it makes users feel that AI is ChatGPT.
The kind of money it takes doesn’t appear from nowhere — it’s backed by Microsoft. With ChatGPT’s strong performance, Microsoft has committed to multi-year support and billions of dollars of investment in OpenAI.
