Webmasters know Alexa well. It has long focused on worldwide website ranking stats — alongside the old Google PageRank, Alexa rank was one of the metrics we used to judge whether a site was successful. Now Alexa is shutting down.
The Shutdown Announcement from Alexa
“We are deprecating Alexa.com on May 1, 2022” — here is my translation:
25 years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After 20 years of helping you find, reach and convert your digital audience, we have made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us the go-to resource for content research and competitive analysis, keyword research, and more.
We are proud to have served you as our customer.
Sincerely, thank you.

My Take
As mobile apps took over, website traffic kept shrinking, so Alexa’s exit makes sense. A large share of internet traffic now lives inside apps, which makes website rankings both less accurate and less meaningful. I doubt shutting Alexa down will hurt webmasters much — it just removes one reference metric.

I watched my own site’s rank climb day after day and found it genuinely motivating. But that’s history now. It’s hard to let go, and I’m ready to say goodbye.
