What a Tracker Is
A tracker is a service that helps BitTorrent along. It stores none of the downloaded files itself; it keeps a list of who is uploading or downloading a given resource and hands that list to clients, so you can connect to more people.
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Peer | Kicks in once you have one working peer — that peer tells you about the others it knows. |
| DHT | Stores peer information across the network. Faster at finding peers, but the routing table usually needs popular torrents to stay healthy. |
| Tracker | Records who is uploading and downloading a resource, so clients connect faster. |
Each of the three has strengths and weaknesses — use them together to get the most out of BitTorrent.
How to Use a Tracker
Adding several trackers when you create a torrent keeps it alive longer and connects you to more downloaders.
In Aria2, BitComet, qBittorrent, Motrix, File Centipede and similar clients, just add this address to the tracker list:

- Network conditions and international transit quality differ by region — connecting to a service abroad can time out or drop.
- Plaintext protocols such as HTTP are easier for ISPs to interfere with, while HTTPS pushes server CPU hard under high concurrency, so it is not offered here.
Why Downloads Are Still Slow
BitTorrent speed depends on how fast other people upload. A tracker helps you find more of them, but it cannot create upload bandwidth out of nothing. Unpopular files may still have no seeders at all, and then peers, DHT and trackers can only help so much.
