NetEase Tech, May 21 — According to the latest results published on the evening of May 20 on TPC-C, the authoritative database ranking, Alipay’s self-developed distributed relational database OceanBase scored above the 100-million mark for the first time in the latest TPC-C benchmark, reaching 707 million tpmC — meaning 707 million new orders created per minute, an nearly 11x improvement over the 60.88 million tpmC of October last year.
Alipay said its self-developed distributed database OceanBase has once again broken the world record; only 7 months have passed since OceanBase last broke the world record, while it took OceanBase 9 years to break the world record the first time.
Public data shows that on November 11, 2019 (Singles’ Day), the peak order-creation rate was 544,000 per second, and Singles’ Day is currently the most comparable real-world high-concurrency scenario.
According to the introduction, traditional databases can only improve overall performance by boosting single-machine performance, making it hard to meet the market’s continuously expanding data-processing needs. OceanBase’s breakthrough lies in adopting a new-generation distributed design technique, overturning the traditional database’s centralized processing technique.
Currently, the number of OceanBase cluster nodes has exceeded 1,500. OceanBase founder Yang Zhenkun said: “OceanBase is currently the only database in the world with over a thousand nodes that has passed the TPC-C test, breaking through the traditional database’s performance bottleneck. In the future, distributed databases will become standard for large-scale business processing.”
According to the official introduction, OceanBase has already gone live at many commercial banks and insurance institutions such as China Construction Bank, Bank of Nanjing, Xi’an Bank, PICC Health, Changshu Rural Commercial Bank, Suzhou Bank, and Guangdong Rural Credit. Two of the world’s top four payment platforms run their core systems on the OceanBase database. At the same time, in March this year, OceanBase officially opened to the world via Alibaba Cloud, letting enterprises obtain “the same database processing power as Alipay” on the cloud.
