A Share of Good Red-Cyan 3D Images

While tidying up today I found the red-cyan 3D glasses I bought years ago. Back when red-cyan 3D first came out it was quite popular — every cinema was showing 3D movies — so I bought a pair to experience at home, and collected some good red-cyan 3D images to share.

Note: the 3D effect only appears when wearing red-cyan glasses (red on the left, cyan on the right); there is no 3D effect with the naked eye. The principle is simple, but the effect you get with your own glasses may not be great, because there’s no standard for the “red-cyan” colors — the red and cyan used by different movies actually differ, and are sometimes not even red and blue; common variants include yellow, green, cyan, magenta, etc. In cinemas the glasses are custom-made for the movie’s colors, so they feel good; when you buy your own you can’t fully match them. A slight color difference — red not fully filtered or cyan not fully filtered — leaves ghosting, and a perfect effect is hard to get. The display device’s color matters too: if the monitor or TV is off in color, even a perfect glasses-and-movie match will still show ghosting.

Suggestions:

1. Increase brightness, contrast, and color saturation (adjust dynamically as needed).

2. Watch in a dark room (best with the lights off at night).

3. Play on a large screen (best on a widescreen monitor of 19 inches or more).

4. Sit farther back.
